Makhamat Tomaity
Folk hero, Russian Army ensign, leader of the peasant uprising 1850 in Rook and Urstwal Gorges of South Ossetia.
The uprising had a class-liberation character. Peasants and Tomaevs clan joined in struggle trying to solve the common problem – defend their independence from Georgian dukes Machabely. The military expedition against Ossetians headed by Russian duke Andronikov moved into rebellion Gorges. In spite of vehement strife the insurgents eventually were suppressed.
M.Tomaity was caught and condemn to penal servitude. But later Governor of Caucasus changed the sentence with the exile in Siberia.
