Balo was born in April 1900 and died in November 1971 in USA.
Balo had one key focus in life: fight for the independence of Ossetia and utilize any means to achieve this. For this goal, he collaborated with many nations and Intelligence Agencies including Turkey, the Germans and before the ending of WWII also with the USA Military Intelligence. Later he worked for the CIA, but it should be very clear that the KGB knew of his location in the USA, tolerated his existence and used his Intelligence Services after WWII within the USA and saw him as an interesting source of information. He had no real loyalties for the various nations, but used his capabilities as a means to an end to what he called “free Ossetia”. He worked with all Caucasian nationalities and religions in order to try to reach this goal.
He was also involved in the North Caucasus National Committee (NCNC) in Germany. About one year before WWII ended, a group of the German Intelligence community (of course not reported to Hitler) and the NCNC started organizing a small and loyal Caucasian fighter group (Christians and Muslims) that would be able to be sold off to the USA military, which took place. There were at least two locations where the troops where situated: one was in Bad Aibling Germany with about 400 soldiers. The organization was still present several years after the ending of WWII. Their main task was if the USSR did attack Western Europe then the troops would be sent into the USSR to destroy Communication, Energy and Transportations networks and for the assassinations of key political and military people. As far as I know, the groups where dissolved around 1947 but never really operational. In return, the USA promised to have Caucasus be freed from the “USSR imperialism”. Neither the promises of the Nazis nor US Government became reality.
I would be very surprised if the Nazis or the US government would have given Ossetia their independence.
Later when Balo became much older he stated several times that working with so many nationalities, different people and religions throughout his life forced him to become much more tolerant and respectful for “different thinking and acting people” and that he deeply regretted any harm that he might have caused. He also realized that he would never achieve his goal.
It is interesting that he never discussed his operations with his wife Baza who died in 2001 nor his children.
Balo had a very charismatical personality, believed very deeply in his life mission and fought very fiercely using all means.
There are very many articles on the internet in Turkish regarding Balo Bilatti and he wrote a small book in turkisch regarding Caucasus published in Turkey. I cannot read Turkish.
