Kazbek Karsanov  

(1910-1997) 

Major-general, Hero of the Soviet Union 

 

 
K.Karsanov was born in Elkhot, North Ossetia into a peasant family. 

In 1935 he completed a full course at Moscovsky Artillery School and after graduating he was appointed a platoon commander.  

In 1939-1940 he participated in Soviet-Finnish War, contributing to the break-through the Mannergeim Defensive Line.  

In 1940 for the personal courage and heroism, battalion commander G.Karsanov was honored with the highest honorary title – Hero of the Soviet Union.  

During the WW2 Karsanov participated in many significant battles, including the one defending Moscow. He liberated cities of Byelorussia, Baltic countries and Eastern Prussia.  

In June 1945, during the Victory Parade, with many orders and medals on his chest he headed a combined battalion at the Red Square in Moscow. 

After the War was over Karsanov completed a course at Frunze Military Academy and later on was in command of artillery formations.
